What is GraceRoom?
GraceRoom is the Lutheran and Episcopal Campus Ministry at CSUMB. It is staffed by Pastor Clark Brown and Father Jon Perez and it is supported by local Episcopal and Lutheran Churches. Our work at CSUMB is two-fold: we provide opportunities for worship and other activities from a progressive, inclusive, and renewing Christian perspective; and we provide spiritual support as campus chaplains to the whole CSUMB community no matter what your background is. We can provide a listening ear and a thoughtful response for your life questions, provide a spiritual perspective in classes and other forums, or help you connect with another spiritual community at or around CSUMB.
Who are Father Jon and Pastor Clark?
Jon Perez came to the Episcopal Church after a career in the corporate and non-profit worlds. He is the vicar of Epiphany Church in Marina, CA, a joint Episcopal-Lutheran congregation. Epiphany is the largest social service facilitator in Marina and has been given the prestigious Jubilee Center outreach classification by The Episcopal Church. The congregation is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-political. Currently, he serves on the Lutheran Episcopal Coordination Committee (LECC), resolving practical and theological issues between the ELCA and Episcopal Church. He is also senior chaplain and guest lecturer to California State University Monterey Bay, and was awarded the Atkinson Civil Rights Award recipient from American Civil Liberties Union.
Clark Brown has served as campus minister and chaplain at CSUMB since 2009, and has been pastor at St. Timothy Lutheran Church of Monterey for over 13 years. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Biochemistry and worked in that field before attending seminary. Emphasizing faith formation during seminary and beyond, Clark strongly believes religious faith and science belong together. Clark also pursues singing and acting in local productions as hobbies. (See him next in “Crazy for You” at the Western Stage in November-December 2013.)
